The Metal-poor Metallicity Distribution of the Ancient Milky Way

نویسندگان

چکیده

We present a low metallicity map of the Milky Way consisting $\sim$111,000 giants with $-3.5 \lesssim$ [Fe/H] $\lesssim -$0.75, based on public photometry from second data release SkyMapper survey. These stars extend out to $\sim$7kpc solar neighborhood and cover main Galactic stellar populations, including thick disk inner halo. Notably, this can reliably differentiate metallicities down $\sim -3.0$, thus provides an unprecedented view into ancient, metal-poor Way. Among more metal-rich in our sample ([Fe/H] $> -2.0$), we recover clear spatial dependence decreasing mean as function scale height that maps onto component When only considering very $< -$2), no such their $|Z|\sim7$ kpc. find distribution (MDF) most ($-3.0 <$ -2.3$) is well fit exponential profile slope $\Delta\log(N)/\Delta$[Fe/H] = 1.52$\pm$0.05, shifts 1.53$\pm$0.10 after accounting for target selection effects. For -2.3$, MDF largely insensitive $|Z|$ $\sim5$kpc, showing extremely are every galactic component.

The Metallicity Distribution of the Milky Way Bulge

The Galactic bulge of the Milky Way is made up of stars with a broad range of metallicity, –3.0 < [Fe/H] <1 dex. The mean of the metallicity distribution function decreases as a function of height z from the plane and, more weakly, with galactic radius RGC. The most metal-rich stars in the inner Galaxy are concentrated to the plane and the more metal-poor stars are found predominantly further f...

Metal-Poor Globular Clusters of the Milky Way and Environs

We review properties of the most metal-deficient globular clusters and halo stars in the local universe as of March 2001, with goals of examining present evidence for the duration of the initial burst of massive cluster formation in the Milky Way, determining when that burst occurred, and elucidating what appears to be limiting our present understanding. Such issues bear upon many topics to ari...

The metallicity distribution of the halo and the satellites of the Milky way in the hierarchical merging paradigm

Aims. To account for the observed differential metallicity distribution (DMD) of the Milky Way halo, a semi-analytical model is presented in the framework of the hierarchical merging paradigm for structure formation. Methods. It is assumed that the Milky Way halo is composed of a number of sub-haloes with properties either as observed in the dwarf satellite galaxies of the Local group (shape of...

Testing the universal stellar IMF on the metallicity distribution in the bulges of the Milky Way and M 31

Aims. We test whether the universal initial mass function (UIMF) or the integrated galaxial IMF (IGIMF) can be employed to explain the metallicity distribution (MD) of giants in the Galactic bulge. Methods. We make use of a single-zone chemical evolution model developed for the Milky Way bulge in the context of an inside-out model for the formation of the Galaxy. We checked whether it is possib...

Extremely-Metal Poor Stars in the Milky Way: A Second Generation Formed after Reionization?

Cosmological simulations of Population III star formation suggest an initial mass function (IMF) biased toward very massive stars (M & 100 M⊙) formed in minihalos at redshift z & 20, when the cooling is driven by molecular hydrogen. However, this result conflicts with observations of extremely-metal poor (EMP) stars in the Milky Way halo, whose r-process elemental abundances appear to be incomp...
